Charity of the Year 2007 Maggie’s Edinburgh Around 70 people drop in to the Maggie’s Centre in the grounds of the Western General Hospital each day and this year the Centre are expecting a record-breaking 18,000 visits. For those who have not visited a Maggie’s Centre, here’s a snapshot of what goes on inside the warm, friendly, uplifting building so many people treat as a home-from-home. Anyone affected by cancer can drop-in at any time to have a chat with Andrew, Seonaid or Isobel (the Centre Head and Information & Support Specialists respectively), to browse the library or to attend one of the drop-in relaxation sessions designed to help people cope with the consequences of a diagnosis of cancer. The next step for many is to sign up for either the Living with Cancer Course or the Caring for Someone with Cancer Course but many are content just to drop in and chat, finding the homely kitchen table the best therapy of all. Jim & Ruby, the Centres’ long-standing volunteers, will often make people their first cup of tea but make sure that people know that there’s no standing on ceremony in Maggie’s and that they are welcome to help themselves the next time they are in. Some, however, have financial worries and this is where Anne, the Centre’s Benefits Advisor, can help. Anne has drop-in sessions as well as booked appointments so people never need to wait for long before speaking to someone. For ‘graduates’ of the Living with Less Stress Course, there are drop-in relaxation sessions interspersed throughout the week to ensure that even when people have returned to work, they can still access this vital support. Laurent’s Tai Chi Sessions are always well-attended, as are Kellie’s Nutrition Courses and the Look Good Feel Better Workshops which Annette takes every second Tuesday. Many people come in to Maggie’s to take part in a group, for example the Meditation or Family & Friends Group, or indeed one of the cancer-specific networking groups that meet in the Centre such as the Brain Tumour Group, the Prostate Cancer Group or the Young Adult Group. These groups are always facilitated by a member of the Centre’s staff, either Andrew, Seonaid or Isabel, or the Centre Psychologist Elspeth Salter who splits her time between running the groups & courses and providing one-to-one support for anyone who needs it. Friday afternoons are pots & brushes time but no, it’s not time for the weekly ‘deep clean’, it’s Tricia’s Art Therapy Group who meet every Friday to express feelings they may have difficulty in putting into words but that they can find a release for in pictures, shapes & colours. The participants relish this opportunity to slow down & gather their thoughts and often leave with a deeper understanding of what they are feeling. Edinburgh Charity Game hopes to raise over £20,000 for this wonderful charity if you would like more info visit there website at www.maggiescentres.org or contact Marion Taylor by emailing marion@maggiescentres.org
