Charity Game Race Night A Huge Success !! - 1/3/08

As the 2007 race night was such a big success and the night alone raising £2137, which contributed to the final total of £13,500 being handed over to Simpsons Special Care Babies, we decided to do the same for this year’s event and this went ahead at the Orwell Lodge on Saturday 23 February.

Around 110 people turned out to support the night and the first race was to begin at 7.30pm, however, things got off to a rocky start as there was a problem with the sound system and this delayed the races starting.  After around 45 minutes trying to get this sorted, the races finally began!

The night consisted of the standard eight races, with the eighth one being an auction race, which saw a bit of banter between Callum Anderson, the Hearts charity team coach and Scott Moncrieff, one of the organisers.  They were trying to compete against each other by seeing who could collect the most money by selling the horses in the auction race, Scott had horses 1, 3, 5 & 7, with Callum having horses 2, 4, 6 & 8 and the loser having to put £20 into the charity fund out of their own pocket.  There was only £10 in it once the last horse had been sold and it was Scott who came out as the loser, however, the charity was the winner out of it all as it gained another £20 out of Scott’s pocket!

As well as the normal raffle, which we had several prizes ranging from Bedlam Paintball to a shopping experience at Frasers, we also held a special raffle for a framed signed Hearts top, framed signed Hibs top, framed signed photo of Steven Gerard of Liverpool FC and a framed signed photo of John Terry of Chelsea FC.  A Hearts ball, 2 Hibs balls, 1 Rangers ball and 1 Celtic ball, all signed, were auctioned off.  The raffles alone generated just over £1000.

A special mention must go to Singatures4u for kindly framing the two tops and donating the two signed photos.  Thanks to all the race sponsors for sponsoring the races and also for donating a prize for the winner of their race and finally a big thanks to all the companies who kindly donated prizes for the raffle prize, without all your kind donations the night would not have been such a success.

I would also like to thank Marion Taylor from Maggie’s for coming along on the night with three volunteers to help sell the race totes and also to Jane & Lorraine for offering to sell the raffle tickets.  Most importantly, we would like to thank everybody that supported the event and turned up on the night and for their generosity in helping to raise such a great total.

A great night was enjoyed by all and the total amount raised from the night was a fantastic £2409.  This amount will be added to the rest of the money made from the Charity Match itself.

Sharon Moncrieff
